Being a leader and leading a team is one of the strategies
for success in today’s business environment. Leadership is certainly not
bestowed on someone because of their rank or title, it has to be won by
walking their talk. With this in mind, the e2Aus Leadership model is based on
behaving as a leader. No one is ‘born a leader’, it is our behaviors that
determine whether people see us as a leader. Duncan’s four principles to
leadership are Vision and Values, Communication, Empowerment and
Demonstration. Equally important is the recognition that we lead in a
‘whole-of’ life’ approach. This covers ourselves, our family, our business
and our broader communities.
1.
Vision and Values
Great Leadership begins with having a
direction in which to lead. Your vision for the future should encompass all
aspects of your life, hence why we talk about 360° Leadership. Consider these
four aspects of your life and consider the Vision for the ‘total you’. (Refer
to the 7 Categories of Life to further refine your vision and values)

Your Business

Your Family

Your Community
§
Your Self
From your Vision you will then be able to
break it down into a single, or series of Mission Statements. From here, it
is simply a matter of determining the goals that make up the pathway to the
Mission and setting out to achieve them, one step at a time. Your values are
like a set of guidelines and beliefs as to how and why you will conduct
yourself as you pursue your vision. Values include things like adventure,
success, job satisfaction, honesty, courage etc..
2.
Communication
Critical to setting the conditions around you
for the pursuit and achievement of your Vision is the ability to communicate
with those that will support you. Clear communication will build trust and
understanding so that those involved in your business and life can understand
your true intent. Taking the time to build open communication within your
environment and networks is one of the essential components of B-Leadership
success.
3.
Empowerment
Empowerment yields high trust, productive
communication between individuals and teams, and innovative results where each
member of the team feels welcome to bring his or her genius to the table.
Empowerment brings with it responsibility, for you and those you empower.
Critical to successful empowerment is setting clear rules and recognising
success in others.
4.
Demonstration
Leadership isn’t a certificate on your wall,
or participation in a course. Leadership is your vision, attitude and values
crystallised every moment of your life in your behaviour. We believe that
great Leaders are born, but more importantly we believe that mediocre leaders
can become great by focusing on the traits of great leaders and modifying
behaviours.
